This season, the Northumberland Football League introduced a 3rd Division. The goal was admirable: growth. But the reality on the pitch has told a different story.
When you look at the recent results—scorelines like 22-0, 18-0, and 16-2—it becomes obvious that the gap between the teams in this division is simply too wide to be sustainable.
The Flaw in the System
Currently, Division 3 acts as a holding pen for everyone new. This means you have two very different types of squads sharing a pitch:
High-Performance New Entrants: Experienced players or reserve sides from big clubs who are forced to start at the bottom.
True Recreational Teams: Groups of friends or beginners just starting their journey.
When these two meet, nobody benefits. The recreational teams lose heart, and the competitive teams lose out on meaningful match practice.
The Proposal
It is time to acknowledge that “New” does not always mean “Beginner.” For the 2026/27 season, we are advocating for:
Two Competitive Divisions (Div 1 & Div 2): Where standard promotion/relegation applies. Strong new teams should be vetted and allowed to enter directly into Division 2.
A Dedicated Recreational League: A separate entity for development teams. No automatic promotion—teams only move to the competitive league when they apply and feel ready.
This ensures that Sunday afternoons remain competitive for the ambitious and enjoyable for the developing. It’s about keeping players in the game, whatever their level.
Let’s fix this for the good of the game.
